It may seem like a simple thing, and perhaps quite obvious, but Harrisburg Academy cannot and would not be the community it is today if it weren’t for our parent community. Parents partnering with the school community — including other parents, our alumni, faculty, staff, and students — is a key reason why the Academy is able to offer the best independent school education in Central Pennsylvania.
At the Academy, we stress the need for parents of Academy students to trust our curriculum, program choices, and the professionalism of our employees. We ask that parents be patient and have realistic expectations for their child in the learning process, knowing that our teachers are equally invested in each student’s success and growth. Our Community Compact outlines the foundational agreements that support the parent-school-student partnership. Its important principles include (but are not limited to) the following:
- We agree to be mindful of the Academy’s 15 character traits, respect all community members, and treat them with kindness and dignity.
- We agree to serve as positive role models.
- With questions and concerns, we agree to seek information directly from the appropriate source.
- We agree to communicate in a timely manner.
The Academy extends these principles through hands-on volunteering opportunities that specifically engage parents. Spending time in your child’s classroom, extending your professional expertise through senior internship opportunities within our Centers for Experiential Learning & Innovation, assisting in the Development Office or lending a hand at Parents Association events are all ways you can build your connections within, to, and for our school community.
The Parents Association, in particular, is the heart of parent involvement on campus. Every parent with a child in the school is automatically a member of this group and is invited to attend monthly planning meetings and to engage in the community-building events the group organizes throughout the academic year. For those who would rather give of their time with external rather than internal activities, the Academy happily welcomes them to the Parent Ambassadors group. As a group of current and alumni parents, these volunteers not only learn more about the Academy mission, message, and market, but choose to share their experiences, passion, and goodwill to friends, family, co-workers, and community members.
No matter how you choose to engage, all of these areas are vitally important to the success of our school. Because of the commitment of so many, the Academy continues to thrive as the best school in Central Pennsylvania. Thank you – we couldn’t do it without you!
