Robot Teacher in front of South Korean students
No more teachers dirty looks, as long as the students enjoying the benefits of South Korea’s full school curriculum digitization aren’t playing StarCraft or Angry Birds.
South Korea’s Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology will be pouring over two trillion dollars into digitizing all books and resources, making them available for download and use via a massive cloud server, and setting up online classroom capabilities for students who have fallen behind due to illness or other circumstances.
While typical families will be expected to pay for their own technology, some money will go toward subsidizing tablet computers and other technology for those families who can’t afford it.
South Korea is already a world leader in technology; from research and development to design and manufacturing. It is likely you use a piece of technology today that was designed and built in South Korea. If you own an Apple product, several of the components were made in South Korea, and a great number were designed there too.
There appears to be little fear that the plan will fail, whether due to technological issues or human failure. South Korean students start using technology at home and in the classroom from an early age, and for many, technology is part of the culture, part of what sets South Korea apart.
