It may snow outside, but our winter sports teams will be indoors in the pool and on the hardwood this season.

This year, our Varsity Swim team head coach Chris Clark is taking the swim team to a local high school for practices.  I asked our 19-year veteran coach what she’s looking forward to this year and she replied, “Swimming took a new direction this year.  We are becoming an increasingly larger team.  We now are practicing in a new venue, East Pennsboro varsity pool.  We will swim all of our qualifying meets at Cumberland Valley with one meet at Northern High School.

“With a larger and more competitive team, bigger expectations and goals are set.  This year each swimmer will be trying to improve his/her times individually.  Our first meet will set benchmark times that will set the pace for improvement in each meet,” Clark continued.  “I am so excited to have a great group of swimmers who work hard at practice and a supportive administration who went over and above to get us a new pool.”

The Middle School Girls’ Basketball team is coming off a championship season last year, winning the Central Penn Basketball League (CPBL).  This year, head coach Lindsay Bowman has four 8th grade players that have waited for their opportunity to lead.  I believe they will take advantage of the opportunity.  I asked Coach Bowman what she and her assistant coach, Leigh Ann Urban, are looking forward to this season after being runners-up in the Mount Calvary Christian School tip-off tournament in early December.  Bowman responded, “I love the game of basketball for its competition and what it teaches student-athletes about teamwork and sportsmanship.  You can’t hide in basketball either; on a small court with only five girls, experience and skill matter.

“Coming off of the championship season last year, we have a good mix of returning players and those new to the game.  I want the girls to play with more confidence and adaptability this season.  Coach Urban and I teach them the skills, but they have to execute on game days; it’s up to them.  It’s early in the season, but already in practice, I see determination, drive, and positive attitudes.  We are all excited to have a chance to repeat as champions of the CPBL!”
